The 36% that's going to wreck a lot of 2027 budgets
Marketing leaders now expect AI to automate 36% of marketing work by 2028, up from 16% today. Every CMO I know read that as a headcount line item. They're misreading it.
That 36% is a measure of breadth — tasks that AI touches. It says nothing about depth: workflows that actually run end to end without a human stitching the pieces together. And depth is where the money is.
Here's the tell. Only 23% of companies have AI agents fully integrated into their stack in production. The rest are running AI in silos. A tool drafts the email. A different tool scores the lead. A person copies output A into tool B. You didn't remove the labor. You relocated it — to lower-leverage glue work nobody put on a roadmap.
So when you cut three roles against the 36% headline, your remaining team doesn't get more strategic. They become orchestrators of disconnected bots.
The fix isn't another tool. It's a different metric. Stop counting automated tasks. Count automated workflows. Take your three highest-volume plays — inbound routing, nurture, reporting — map every handoff, and count how many complete with zero human touch.
At most companies drowning in AI, that number is close to zero. That gap — not the 36% — is your actual 2027 roadmap.
What's the longest workflow your team runs today with no human in the loop?
